Eminent educationalist, philanthropist, and former Governor Padmashree Dr. Jnandev Yashwantrao Patil, popularly known as D.Y. Patil, passed away on Monday due to age-related illnesses at the age of 90. His demise marks the end of an era for India’s education sector, where his visionary contributions particularly transformed the landscape of professional learning.
Born on October 22, 1935, Dr. Patil played a monumental role in building world-class institutions across medical science, engineering, management, and agriculture. As the founder of the D.Y. Patil Group, he established one of the largest private education networks in the country, encompassing over 182 educational institutions, seven deemed universities, international schools, and top-tier multi-speciality hospitals. Headquartered in Maharashtra, these institutions have shaped the careers of millions of students over the decades.
Beyond his exceptional academic journey, Dr. Patil was also a distinguished figure in public life. He served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly before taking up high constitutional offices as the Governor of Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal.
