Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) and opposition leadership in Kerala are facing a severe political and legal crisis as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) intensifies its probe into the “monthly payment” (Masappadi) case, shifting its focus toward former Chief Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, Pinarayi Vijayan.
If named as an accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Pinarayi Vijayan may be forced to resign from his position as the Leader of the Opposition. In response, the CPI(M) leadership is exploring all possible legal and political avenues to navigate the situation.
Following statements from his daughter, Veena Vijayan, and revelations by CMRL owner Kartha, Pinarayi Vijayan has directly sought detailed legal advice from senior Supreme Court advocates and legal experts. Being named as an accused or facing severe ED actions like arrest would pose a major legal and moral setback, hindering the opposition’s ability to challenge the government inside and outside the Assembly. Consequently, the CPI(M) is seriously considering options, including the possibility of his resignation. Preparations are also underway to approach the court for anticipatory relief.
ED Tightens the Noose: Veena’s Statement Backfires
A key element in the ED’s case is Veena Vijayan’s statement: “Only my father knows everything.”
The agency suspects Pinarayi Vijayan was the central figure behind the financial transactions involving Exalogic, where crores of rupees were allegedly received as monthly payments without providing actual services. The ED is investigating whether these funds were transferred to his daughter’s firm in exchange for political favors rendered during his previous ministerial tenure. ED notices summoning Pinarayi Vijayan for questioning are expected in the coming days.
CPI(M) Plans Strong Political Defense
The CPI(M) State Committee has decided to mount a strong political fight regardless of legal outcomes. The party plans to launch a campaign alleging that central agencies are being weaponized to target the Leader of the Opposition and the CPI(M) leadership in the state.
However, given existing criticisms within the Central Committee reports and growing public discontent, doubts remain about how effectively the party can defend Pinarayi Vijayan in this case. Central agency actions are set to trigger a major political storm in Kerala in the coming days.
