In a major development, the Kerala Home Department has issued a crucial order forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to launch a fresh probe into the alleged attack on former Health Minister Veena George at Kannur Railway Station. The decision was taken based on a special complaint submitted by Kannur MLA T. O. Mohanan. In his complaint, the legislator argued that the incident in which the former minister was allegedly assaulted during a Kerala Students Union (KSU) protest, as well as the police case that followed, were completely fabricated and demanded a comprehensive re-investigation.
The new Special Investigation Team will be led by a high-ranking officer of Superintendent of Police (SP) rank. Initially, the case was being investigated by the Railway Police, who had arrested nearly five KSU activists, including the KSU district president, in connection with the incident. Notably, this is the third SIT announced by the state government to probe protest-related cases involving opposition youth wings like the KSU and Youth Congress. Over the coming days, the newly appointed team will re-examine the case in detail by collecting fresh witness testimonies and gathering crucial evidence.
